Ankle Pain

FitFor Physio offers ankle sprains treatment to providing rehabilitation for fractured and broken ankles.

Common causes of ankle sprains

Most of us have suffered a sprained ankle – whether it’s a result of a sudden movement in sport, your foot giving way when walking on irregular ground or even incorrectly stepping from a height. A sprained ankle describes where the ligaments of the ankle are torn or partially torn. Ligaments are flexible, but a sudden twist can cause them to stretch too far.

When you experience a sprained ankle you can have mild to severe ankle pain, swelling, bruising, difficulty in moving and instability in the ankle (with severe cases). Minor to moderate ankle sprains will heal in their own time but treatment can speed up the process and it’s important to check with a medical practitioner if you have incurred a break or fracture

What’s the symptoms of a sprained ankle?

The symptoms will depend on how severe your injury is but commonly include:

  • pain

  • swelling

  • bruising

  • restricted movement

  • limited ability to put weight on your foot

  • a popping or tearing sound at the time of your injury

Sprained ankles are grouped into three grades:

Grade I

A grade I sprain is a mild sprain, and may occur when you overstretch a ligament. You may have minor swelling, bruising and pain around your ankle, but you should be able to put some weight on your foot.

Grade II

A grade II sprain is a moderate sprain. It may occur when you overstretch and partially tear a ligament. The swelling, bruising and pain around your ankle may be moderate. You may find it difficult to put weight on your foot.

Grade III

A grade III sprain is a severe sprain, and may occur when you completely tear a ligament. The swelling, bruising and pain around your ankle is usually severe. You won’t able to put any weight on your foot without feeling extreme pain.

Whatever the cause or grade, your best course of action is to seek help fast.
